Music that Jesus wouldn't listen too

Our culture of entertain has this idea that "as long as I don't agree with what they [the artist] say, I can still enjoy it." and most people just look past the foulness and profanity so they can enjoy the beats and sound.  Even worse is some people try to justify the disgusting-ness of the music so that they can easily justify themselves for liking it.  Lets split some hairs and get down to the truth of the matter.

  1. For Christians, a sin is a sin, and they are all equal.  Big to small, they are all corrosive and ungodly.
  2. God hates sin, big or small.
  3. Christians are commanded to stay away from evil and hate evil as well.
    • Psalm 97:10
Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
    • Proverbs 8:13
To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.
    • Amos 5:15
Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
    • John 3:20
Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.
    • Romans 1:30
      slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;
    • Romans 12:9
[ Love in Action ] Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
What does this mean when it comes to music? Well, simply giving a taste of some of the lyrics is all that is needed.

"two bi***** at the same time, synchronized swimmers
got the girl twisted 'cause she open when you twist her
never met the bi****, but I f*** her like I missed her
life is the bi***, and death is her sister
sleep is the cousin, what a f*****' family picture
you know father time, we all know mother nature
it's all in the family, but I am of no relation
no matter who's buying, I'm a celebration
black and white diamonds, f*** segregation
f*** that s***, my money up, you niggas just Honey Nut
Young Money running s*** and you niggas just runner-ups"

The artist and song doesn't matter.  That is not the point and is not what is being looked at here.  It is the amount of profanity and profane content in this short verse of a song. 11 words that are degrading and vulgar.  The content is degrading to women in regards as sexual toys and one night stands; the materialistic and slanderous prideful remarks are also evident here as well.

People will say "well that's just looking too deep at the lyrics."  Jesus has a response to this idea.

Matthew 12:36-37

36 "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.  For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

That's not being metaphoric or symbolic.  The context of that statement is literal.  We, even this artist, will be held accountable for every single word that comes out of his mouth and why it was said.  Words do matter.  Every word matters.  Words ARE a big deal.

Only God knows the future of the artist who said these hateful things but you know if you are choosing to support the same hateful things.  Just like the artist, forgiveness is free and freedom from a deprived mind is also free by grace. Be free from this way of thinking and this enslaved false enjoyment of hateful words and thoughts.

So what Christians need to ask themselves are:

  1. Do you want to expose your ears and heart to things that are hateful to God?

  2. Do you want to support lyrics by listening to them, that are hateful to God?

  3. Do you want to justify words that are hateful to God, for your entertainment?

If you answer yes to any of these, then the final question is, why is it that you chose something that is so hateful to the God you claim to love?  That's the same thing as telling people you love someone, then stabbing them in the back.

If you answer no to these and yet you do listen and enjoy music that is hateful to God than you are not even honest with yourself.

The ultimate question is;

Do you actively chose to seek out music that is hateful to the God you claim to love?

Are you truly free from sin?
